These instructions are for the HP Scanjet in the Humanities Digital Workshop. This scanner has a multi-page feeder so you can scan a multi-page document all at once.
How to Scan:
First, Set Up the Document in the Scanner
- Turn the switch on the top of the scanner forward to position 1.
- Place the page(s) in the multi-sheet feeder (top tray of scanner) with the text facing upward. The first sheet of a multi-page document should be on top.
- Turn the switch on the top of the scanner towards you (position 3).
Next, Run Omnipage Pro to Scan the Document.
- Open Omnipage Pro (there is a shortcut on the desktop of the PC)

- Choose the settings that you would like to use:
- Most likely, you would want to use "AutoOCR". If you choose this, you also probably want to use the following settings:
- Document Source: "Scan B&W"
- Original Layout: "Mixed Page"
- Output Format: "True Page"
- Export Destination: "Save as File"
- Once you have chosen your settings, you can start scanning. To do this, just click the green "Start" button.

- The scanner should now be scanning the first page. It will take some time before it is done. Once the first page is scanned, you will be prompted to decide what to do. If you do not choose an option after about 10 seconds, it will choose Scan Next Page for you. The options are:
- Pause if you have more pages, but don¹t want to continue scanning right away, you can pause and later press "Continue" (the same button as the Start button in step 3).
- Scan Next Page if you have more pages to scan, and would like to scan the next page now, press the Scan Next Page button
- Stop Scanning if you do not have any more pages to scan, click the Stop Scanning button. If it is scanning a page you did not want to scan (or trying to scan a page when there is no page in the scanner) you can press the red Stop button (next to the original green Start button).
- Once you are finished scanning the first page, Omni Page Pro will begin to "Proofread" your document for words it does not recognize. This is just like a spell check in word processing programs.

- If the Proofreader does not let you click any buttons other than Resume or Close, click Resume to continue proofreading. This will happen occasionally when a new page is being scanned. To correct errors, you can type the correction in the "Change to" box or choose the correct word from the list below it. Then click either Change or Change All to change just that instance or all instances of the incorrect spelling. If it finds a word that you do not want to change, just click on Ignore All.
- When the Proofreader is finished (or if you click the Close in the Proofreader) it will ask you to save the document. You can choose the location and name as you do in any other Windows program. You should also choose a File Type. Most likely, you want to choose "Word for Windows 97, 2000 [TP] (*.doc)" to make the file a Microsoft Word document.
- When you press the OK button, your file will open for editing (if you chose the settings in step 7, this would be in Word and you can then edit the file like any other Word Document).
