Once these steps are completed, you may easily dial in and connect your computer to the Internet, read email, surf the web, etc. This is for modem setup only. If you dial in from the 314, 636 area codes, or on-campus, follow these directions. Before you begin, you need to have the following items:

  1. A valid Artsci account (username and password).
  2. A modem in or connected to your Macintosh.

Create a Network Profile

  1. From the Dock, click the System Preferences icon, and in the next panel, click Network. Or, from the Apple menu, select Location and then, Network Preferences.
  2. Under the TCP/IP tab, select Configure: Using PPP.
  3. In the Network panel, from the Configure menu, select Internal Modem. If this panel is grey and inactive, click the lock icon in the bottom left corner to activate it.
  4. In the Domain Name Servers box, enter the following numbers:
    128.252.93.1
    128.252.120.1
  5. In the Search Domains box, enter the following: wustl.edu
  6. Click the PPP tab, and in the Telephone Number box, enter 512-0028. If you are calling from another area code (like 636) you will need to enter 314-512-0028 or 1-314-512-0028. In the Account Name box, enter your Artsci username (if your E-mail address is johnsmith@artsci.wustl.edu, your username is johnsmith). We recommend that the Save password option not be turned on.
  7. Close the Network panel and when prompted, click Save.

Connecting to the Campus Network

  1. While in the Finder, select Go and then Applications.
  2. Open the Internet Connect application.
  3. When the Internal Modem window displays, enter your password into the Password box. Use uppercase and lowercase letters exactly as you specified them when you created your password (make sure the Caps Lock key is not pressed!).
  4. Click Connect. Your computer will attempt to contact the server, when a connection has been established, the Status will say Connected, and a Disconnect button will display.
  5. You can minimize Internet Connect to the dock, or quit it without affecting your connection. To quit, from the Internet Connect menu, select Quit Internet Connect. You may also use the phone menu at the top of the screen to connect and disconnect.

You are now connected to the campus network and can use and perform network related tasks such as surfing the web or reading e-mail.

Disconnecting from the Campus Network

When you've finished using network related services, you should disconnect properly to ensure that your modem hangs up, freeing your phone line for other calls and releasing the campus connection for someone else to use.

  1. To disconnect, in the Finder, select Go and then Applications, and open Internet Connect.
  2. Click Disconnect.
