Transfer Files Using FTP

FTP or file transfer protocol is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol. There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer: a server and a client. These instructions will help you to open an FTP connection to your account on ArtSci. Once you have established the connection, you can upload or download files to and from your account.

Before you begin, you need to have:

  1. A valid artsci account (username and password).
  2. A way to connect to the Internet such as an Ethernet connection in a WashU facility, a modem dialing into the ArtSci modem bank, or a DSL/Cable Modem.

How to FTP in Windows Explorer

  1. In Windows XP, right-click the Start menu
  2. Choose Explore
  3. Type the following into the Address Bar substituting your user name (login) for username:ftp://username@artsci.wustl.edu
  4. Enter your login and password when prompted
  5. Click folders to go into directories
  6. DO NOT delete any file that begins with a period and DO NOT delete the mail directory

How to FTP in Windows Explorer using Vista

  1. In Windows Vista, click on the Start menu.
  2.  Type the words Windows Explorer in the "Start Search" box
  3. Type the following into the Windows Explorer Address Bar substituting your user name (login) for username: ftp://username@artsci.wustl.edu
  4. Enter your login and password when prompted
  5. Click folders to go into directories
  6. DO NOT delete any file that begins with a period and DO NOT delete the mail directory

How to FTP Using a Browser

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer 6 (will not work properly in IE7)
  2. In the address bar type, ftp://username@artsci.wustl.edu - substitute username for your user name (login)
  3. Type in your password
  4. Click folders to go into directories
  5. When ready to delete a file, highlight the file and hit the delete key
  6. DO NOT delete any file that begins with a period and DO NOT delete the mail directory

How to Use Secure FTP

You can download a copy from Network Technology Services - http://nts.wustl.edu/wusa/ssh

  1. Launch Secure File Transfer Client.
  2. Click on the Quick Connect icon. Enter artsci.wustl.edu in the host name box. Enter your account name for artsci. Port should remain 22. Click the Connect button
  3. The left panel displays files and folders on your local computer. The right panel displays files and folders on your ArtSci account. On your computer, navigate to the folder containing the files you wish to upload. On ArtSci, double click on the public_html folder to upload web pages
  4. Highlight the file(s) you wish to upload. Right click on the highlighted file(s). From the context menu, select Upload
  5. From the right server panel and the application log at the bottom of the window, verify the upload completed successfully.
