The Energy Policy Act of 2005 was passed to help alleviate energy concerns across the nation. One part of the act that will affect computers is the extension of Daylight Saving Time by four weeks.
These time changes will still take effect at 2 a.m. on their respective days.
Some computer operating systems and applications are already updated to reflect this change. Others may require patches to be downloaded to operate properly with the change.
Windows
Windows Vista does not require any update to be installed for the DST changes.
Microsoft Windows XP (SP2) does require a patch in order to recognize the changes to Daylight Savings Time. The patch download is available through Windows Update or from the Microsoft Download Site - Update for Windows XP (KB931836)
Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 requires a patch in order to recognize the changes to Daylight Savings Time. The patch installer and instructions are available at Microsoft's website.
Applications running on Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 2 may need to be updated (e.g. Outlook, etc.).
For more information, see Microsoft's website.
Updates are currently not available for previous versions of Windows. Either upgrade the operating system to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and then apply the update for DST or, manually change the time once Daylight Savings Time goes into effect by following these steps (you will need to change at new DST Start and End and the Previous DST Start and End dates) Here's how:
Macintosh
Computers with Apple Mac OS 10.3.9 or later already have the updates included in the Macintosh Software Update. Just go to the Apple Menu in the upper left of your screen, choose Software Update and install the updates listed. Applications running on Mac OS X may need to be updated (e.g. Entourage, etc.). For more information see Apple's website.
For Mac OS 10.2.8 and earlier, you must manually change the time once Daylight Saving Time goes into effect by following these steps (you will need to change at new DST Start and End and the Previous DST Start and End dates):
OS9 users will need to go the Apple menu, select Control Panel, then select Date & Time and change the time manually from there. De-select the option to observe Daylight Saving Time changes automatically, then enable Daylight Saving Time manually.
